How to choose crystals based on crystals meanings of colors

Have you ever put on your raw gemstone jewelry and wondered about the meaning of its color? Then keep reading because today I'm sharing crystals meanings of colors. I'll walk you through a color crystal guide of healing stones that will answer questions like what crystal magic can be used for each color, and what are common colors of crystals and gemstones - that will further your knowledge on your crystals for beginners journey.

How many colors do crystals come in?

Crystals come in many colors and shades. Just because a gemstone isn't clear, doesn't mean it's not a healing crystal! They come in every color we can perceive with our eyes, in various shades, and with multi-colored varieties. Some crystals only come in one color like emerald or jet. Other crystals come in bi-color or multi -color like ametrine, bloodstone, or larimar And yet other crystals come in a whole rainbow of color like opal, spinel, or tourmaline.

Crystals are created as the earth forms and shifts, and different environments and circumstances produce different crystal colors and varieties. The earth has given us a rainbow of different energies to use as we work with crystals.

How does color influence crystal energies?

The psychological study color has on our behaviors has been scientifically researched extensively. We often use color subconsciously, “by wearing clothes or eating foods of a certain color. If someone is recovering from a broken relationship, for instance, he or she might start wearing more green. Although the person may not realize that green will help him or her to get over the broken relationship,” explains Richard Webster in Color Magic for Beginners. It's been proven by researchers that colors have a direct effect on our minds. Similarly, colors can affect a crystal’s properties, since crystals have vibrational energetic frequencies.

How do we use colors with crystals?

Crystals are used for holistic healing in addition to modern medicine practices. Some examples of how we can incorporate color in our crystal use include:

  • Choosing a crystal color based on our intention (for example, a protection intention can help us select brown or black crystals to work with)
  • Matching a crystal color to a chakra color for chakra healing
  • Using crystals for color therapy
  • Choosing a crystal based on being drawn to or repelled by a specific color, to discover an intention you may need to work with

Shades, multi-colors, and more

Crystals come in all shades of black, brown, gray, green, yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, blue, and tints of clear, because of their mineral composition. If you have a crystal that is multi-colored or the shade can be described as two different colors, use both or all the colors' meanings when working with the crystal.

In addition to the crystal's color, a crystal may be lustrous. Shimmering and lustrous crystals, like labradorite or sunstone, offer additional meanings. They have the qualities of protection from negativity, and are associated with travel and movement.

Choosing a crystal color + preparation

Choose a crystal by using your intuition and senses to feel which ones you are drawn to. When working with a new crystal, remember to cleanse or charge it before you program your crystal. If you want to know more about how to do this, read my crystals for beginners guide post here.
